The 2019 Zinfandel cultivated by winemaker Mark Mazzoni from the Mazzoni Zinfandel Clone is an estate-grown gem. At the end of the 20th century, a vineyard manager stumbled across this unique planting and was interested in its origins. Mike Mazzoni, Mark's dad, got a cutting from the original ranch (Dr. Pierce’s famous property) and took it to the University of California, Davis, to have it examined, but it couldn’t be identified. “The vine had been evolving and cloning for 90 years,” said Mike. 2019, a drought year, inevitably showcased Mark's multi-faceted talents in continuing his father's viticulture prowess now winemaking. With a nose of cherry and hints of rose petal the aromatics are all nutmeg and five spice powder. A light to medium-bodied palate with strawberry rhubarb and clove is supported by bright acidity.
